Fast Food Workers Demand Double Increase in Pay
Fast Food Workers are demanding an increase in pay. Fast food workers this past Monday went on strike in New York, Chicago, Detroit and other major cities. Workers are not demanding just an ordinary increase. They want to double their present salary of minimum wage ($7.25/hr) to $15 an hour. Workers from McDonalds, Wendys, KFC and others have seen increased worker activity demanding better pay, benefits and working conditions.
"A lot of the workers are living in poverty, you know, not being able to afford to put food on the table or take the train to work," Jonathan Westin, director of Fast Food Forward stated. Mr. Westin continued, "The workers are striking over the fact that they can't continue to maintain their families on the wages they're being paid in the fast food industry." This campaign for bigger pay increases started in just New York. But, now appears to be taking hold in major and some mid-major cities across the USA.
I don't deny that fast food work is very tough, arduous and thankless. Very few get pay increases. However, what few seem to understand, fast food work is and always has been an entry level job for people just starting out. It was never intended to be a career opportunity unless you get into management. To demand a 100% increase because you can't live on minimum wage is preposterous. Now, there was one person, in the article linked above, where a man stated he worked for Burger King for 7 years and all he makes is $7.65 an hour Well, whose fault is that? If you don't like the pay of a job, you look for a better paying job. You don't work at the same job for 7 years expecting to get a big break. This is ridiculous. Most of the fast food jobs were filled by teenagers getting their feet wet in the business world. Once they graduate, they moved on to other things. What this is all about is people who are most likely illegally in the country and whining about the pay they are receiving. I'll say again, illegal aliens will never be satisfied. Fast food restaurants already work on a thin profit margin. If the pay scale is increased to $15/hr, that cost is passed on to the customer. It will also mean more workers will lose their jobs. There is not much thought being given to this campaign. It seems like another "feel-good" activism campaign by liberals. It's not going to work. You want better pay? Go to school, learn something and beat the pavement to look for a better job.. You'll never make a good living on a minimum wage job. That should be common sense.

All political views are welcome. That includes the liberal viewpoint as well. Civil discussion is preferred and encouraged. You can disagree without being disagreeable.
